There have been cases of people with autism getting lost or hurt because they wandered away from home or the presence of a loved one. Follow these tips from the Autism Wandering Awareness Alerts Response Education Coalition to prevent cases of wandering.
- Protect Your Residence
Install home security systems or deadbolts that are out of children’s reach, for example. Having extra security at home can decrease the risk of your loved one slipping out unnoticed. - Consider using a Locating Device
Check with your local law enforcement to see if they offer Project Lifesaver or LoJak SafetyNet services. These tracking devices are worn on the wrist or ankle and use radio frequency to locate the individual. - Have them wear their Medical ID Bracelet
Medical ID bracelets will contain your name, phone number, and other vital information. If applicable, they may also state that your child has autism and is nonverbal. - Learn to Swim with Your Child
People with autism are prone to drowning, especially if they never had swimming practice or lessons. Make it a point to enroll your child in local swimming classes. - Inform Your Neighbors
Introduce their loved one or provide a photograph. Knowing your neighbors can help you reduce the risks of wandering. - Notify First Responders
All pertinent information should be included in informational handouts, which should be copied and carried with caregivers at all times.
